  • No Jaguar fans, 2012 hasn’t arrived early

With the announcement that Jack Del Rio will once again be coaching the Jaguars, Jaguar fans reacted as if Wayne Weaver announced the city would be consumed in hell fire later that day and there would be no escape.

I tuned into talk radio expecting a circus from callers, but what I heard made me wonder if Jacksonville was experiencing an epidemic in stupidity. Comments that ranged from the usual “RABBLE RABBLE FIRE JACKS SORRY @$$”, to the racist “The Jaguars need a White Quarterbacks”, to the downright moronic “There is a franchise QB sitting 3rd on the Texans Depth Chart, Matt Leinart.”

Honestly, there are plenty of legitimate reasons why you would want to get rid of Del Rio. Those have been discussed ad naseum and I won’t bring them up here again.

What got me going was the fact that people were taking this so incredibly seriously. Stories that people were crying at the thought of Del Rio coming back to coach. Others threatening to do violent acts at the stadium.

Listen, I’ve spent the better part of three years writing several hundred articles and some half million words on the Jaguars for free. If that isn’t a sign of being obsessed, I don’t know what is. But after about 15 minutes worth of shock, I shrugged it off and went about my business. It’s just a game people.

If it makes you feel any better, I’m sure David Garrard’s career in Jacksonville is over. Judging my the backlash yesterday with Del Rio, I shudder to think of what reactions will be with another year of Garrard under center. Blaine Gabbert declared for the draft last night, Gene Smith was at the Insight Bowl where Gabbert put on a show, just saying.
